In this class, you will learn a very simple Japanese inspired pickle recipe, as well as how to make miso soup and gyoza (Japanese dumplings). Fermentation has been used for centuries to help preserve food and make some foods easier to digest. Most commercial offerings are loaded with unwanted chemicals and corn syrup. In this workshop you will learn some of the history behind fermented foods as well as the numerous health benefits of introducing more probiotic foods into your diet. After getting excited about eating all these delicious ferments, participants will get learn via an interactive kombucha and kraut making demo and leave with a starter kombucha kit w/ kraut on the side.

Wildcrafting Nature Walk (Introduction to harvesting plants for medicine)

Join myself and amateur herbalist Mike Deniz as we walk along Center Park in Fairport hunting for medicinal and edible plants. Mike will walk us through herbs that are easy to spot their uses in medicine and their lore. He will also walk us through some of the basic tools of the trade and some resources for further exploration into the vast world of wildcrafting (finding and harvesting herbs, roots and flowers) and herbalism. This class is best suited for those looking for an introduction to wildcrafting and herbalism.

This class is held outside along a path that is between 1 1/2 to 2 miles long. Please wear comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty as the class will only be cancelled if walking conditions are impossible due to excessive rain or mud.

Please wear/bring:

long pants/ tick repellent

sunscreen

water

notebook and pen for taking notes

clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

Please park your cars in the large parking lot off of Ayrault rd just east of Turk Hill. I will let you know if this changes. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to sign in.

About the Instructor

Mike is a trained biologist who spends his free time wildcrafting and creating salves, tinctures and other herbal remedies for himself and his loved ones. He has a blog where he shares his experiences and knowledge of herbs which can be found here.
